Goji is Small – but pack quite a punch

Posted in: health & gifts |

It is often said that the Goji berries are one of the most nutritious foods in the world and according to recent researches that may very well be quite true. Weight for weight they contain more iron than red meat, more vitamin C than oranges and more beta carotene than carrots. Goji products also contain many essential fatty acids, as well as calcium, potassium, zinc, riboflavin and selenium. They’re a veritable fount of delectable vitamins, despite being quite small and delicate looking things.

But the most important thing of all is probably the antioxidants. The US Department of agriculture developed a test called ORAC – Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. Foods with high ORAC values can be considered helpful in protecting cells from oxidation and thus fighting the aging process. Blueberries, that are generally counted amongst the “superfoods” in this aspect, have an ORAC value of 2.400 (per 100 grams). Prunes rate 5.770, spinach 1.260. Several tests indicate that the Goji berry may score as high as 25.000, although that number is hard to verify. A great way to buy goji’s is online.  Do a simple search and find many suppliers.
